an unexpected journey

i am writing this mainly as a procrastination tool as i try to work on a powerpoint for my communication class.

That being said, there has been something on my mind lately.

I have realized in the past few months (basically all of 2013) that i have been much more into good quality forms of entertainment. basically i've been in a mood where i would rather read a good book than waste hours mindlessly watching netflix. and i would rather watch a quality movie than Pitch Perfect.

It all started when i went to see the hobbit with my dad over winter break, then i got into Tolkien. He is such an interesting man full of so much knowledge it's astounding. I've been reading Lord of the Rings lately....the man literally created a whole other world. not like Harry Potter where the author creates a world within our world that is fictional and has little history. Tolkien created a world with so much history it seems real. He invented different races, and histories to go along with each of them. and languages for each one also. there are three different tongues of Elvish. It amazes me that someone is so intelligent that he alone can invent even one language that is able to be spoken and written and learned just like english. He created stories about these different races, and the Lord of the Rings story has so much religion in it. Tolkien was a Christian, so there are so many Christian undertones in his stories. Frodo's story is one of good triumphing over evil with the help of a Christ figure and a lowly man who rises to become a King. It's phenomenal. Ever since i've gotten into his stuff its what I'm always interested in learning about. I think i am taking a class on Tolkien's work next semester. The man is truly a genius.

I've also become interested in watching quality movies. Chick flicks have become less interesting to me for the time being (i obviously still love them). I've been really into watching the movies that won Oscars this year. they aren't the normal types of movies that i watch, and thats why i want to watch them. i watched Life of Pi the other day with my dad and it was beautiful. I enjoyed it so much, it's such a great story and the movie has amazingly awesome filmography.

I don't know whats come over me lately, but i have the desire to discover all these great works. normally i use my free time watching HIMYM, but I'm really enjoying this kick I'm on. I think i will continue it.
