i'm assuming that most of the [few] people reading this know the anatomy of Young Life. but if you don't, imma lay it out for you. there are 5 C's of Young Life: contact work, club, campaigners, camp, and Christ. they are all very important. contact work is where leaders go out into the schools and be with the kids. club is a once a week crazy fun event where we play games, sing songs, and hear about the gospel. campaigners goes deeper than club, it's more like a bible study for kids that want to learn more and be leaders in their school. camp is where it's all tied together. the best week of your life. lots of kids start their walk with Christ here. and Christ is the center of everything we do.
so i was thinking this morning on the 'shoe, this place is beautiful like YL camp. camp is guaranteed to be the best week of your life. but then i thought, why? what makes camp different from real life? i couldn't come up with an answer. then i thought, why can't everyday life be like a day at YL camp? it totally can be!
For example, in college:
- quiet times by the dock at Saranac = quiet times on the horseshoe
- cabins = dorms
- cabin time = hanging out with the girls (or guys) on your hall
- free time = free time when there's no class! most of us want to spend this time taking naps, but think about the kids who take naps during free time at camp....LAME! there's so many better things to do with your time.
- football games/any type of function, mixer, etc = theme nights - you get to dress up (especially if your school is in the SEC) and have a rip roaring' good time
- a spin off of club in college is a little harder to come by, so i guess you could break it up:
- worship = church (woo midtown!)
sidenote: class might not exactly be relatable to camp, but who say's that class can't be like contact work? it has all the same principles - going where lost kids are, usually school, being with lost folks in their element. it's perfect! this especially helps me get out of bed to go to early morning class, cuz it's just another opportunity to share the gospel! Check 1 Thessalonians 2:8, we are DELIGHTED to share the gospel of God, and if class is an opportunity for that, we should be delighted to have the opportunity to go to class as well! (although that's not always the case.)
for another example, high school, you gotta get a little more creative:
- quiet times may not be as beautiful at home, but if ya live in Virginia like me, get creative! hello? there's lots of beautiful overlooks from mountains.
- free time = the time after school lets out
- club = YL club (duh)
- cabin time = quality time with friends, face to face, where you dive deep into who Christ is, whether with new believers, non believers, or brothers and sisters in Christ (bonus points for combinations, after all, that's how cabin time is at camp!). i guess campaigners could count too, but i always think cabin time is so special, so a little get together outside of campaigners is more similar to cabin time.
i'm sure there are other ways that college is like camp, but these were the ones i thought of! thinking of school like this really makes me more excited to be at school! maybe it can for you too?
